HISTORY OF T&MUFC
CLUB LEGENDS

Steve Grubb

Steve joined Tooting & Mitcham United at the start of the 1974/75 season from Bexley United, having also previously seen service with Bristol Rovers and Carshalton Athletic. He would leave us in May 1980, joining Leyton Wingate. Steve was a powerful central defender who was a member of our superb side which reached the FA Cup 4th Round Proper losing at Bradford City in season 1975/76.

One of his best games for the club was in the FA Cup First Round tie at Romford in that 75/76 campaign as the Essex side threw everything at us but we managed to sneak a narrow victory by a goal to nil thanks in no small part to Steve’s heroic efforts in defence. He was also outstanding in our 2-1 victory over Swindon Town in the Third Round Proper Replay at Sandy Lane.

Steve won three Surrey Senior Cup winners medals in successive seasons between 1976-1978 as Tooting became the first club to achieve this feat of lifting the County Cup three seasons in a row. He also scored in the first minute of our FA Cup First Round Proper tie at Sandy Lane in November 1974 against Crystal Palace when he side-footed home from a corner. Steve also played up front in another home FA Cup First Round Proper tie in November 1977 against Northampton Town both of the afore mentioned FA Cup ties being narrowly lost.

His representative honours whilst with the Terrors included playing for the London FA. In Steve’s time with ourselves he clocked up over 300 appearances and netted 24 goals. He was one of the best central defenders to play for the club.
