Micky Rootes
Micky joined Tooting & Mitcham United in season 1993-94 from Woking in what would be his first spell at the club. He made his full debt against Tunbridge Wells in a home FA Cup tie in August 1993 which was won 7-0 and had a hand in some of the goals. Later in that campaign the team went close to gaining promotion missing out on the last day of the season. He also played a part in the Reserves lifting the Suburban League Cup.
Micky was usually deployed as an attacking wing back with a keen eye for goal. In May 1996 he had a fine game against Thame United which we won by a goal to nil scored by David Gabriel which saw the Terrors avoid relegation to Isthmian League Division Two. Micky left the Terrors at the end of that 1995-96 campaign but returned in 2000 where he played a major part in the clubs 2nd Division Championship winning team of 2000/01, being a regular scorer and in the last two weeks of the season he was playing nearly every day for Tooting due to the backlog of fixtures. There was also a Surrey Senior Cup runners up medal for him, after the season ended as we went down to Crystal Palace in the Final.
His last match for the stripes came in an injury ravaged 2002/03 season. He then moved to AFC Wimbledon but suffered a cruciate ligament injury in his first game for them. He was however able to play at amateur level for several years.
Micky was one of a select group of players to have been on the books of both Wimbledon and AFC Wimbledon. He also played at Molesey in the 1990’s where he teamed up with former Tooting and Mitcham player and manager Ian Hazel. Micky returned to Imperial Fields in April 2022 when there was a reunion of former Tooting and Mitcham players from the Trevor Ford era who was First Team Manger for several seasons back in the 1990’s.

Micky would make 238 appearances for the Terrors scoring 27 goals. In more recent times he became Manager of Westminster Casuals who play in the Surrey South Eastern Combination League. He still manages to watch the current Tooting & Mitcham United team from time to time and was at our home league game versus Camberley Town in February 2024.
