MATCH REPORTS OCTOBER 2024
Guildford City 2-1 Tooting
The Terrors fell to a second defeat at the Spectrum Arena within the space of a fortnight, but it was difficult to see how we came out on the losing side of this one. First things first; the pitch was terrible. We have to endure a variety of surfaces at the level we’re currently playing at, but this was quite the worst I’ve seen Tooting ever have to play on, and I’ve been watching - on and off - for thirty-six years. It was markedly worse than when we won there back in March and even Manchester City would struggle to get any sort of passing game going on the undulating, hard-to-read surface. It goes some way to explaining why Guildford have won four of their six matches played here this season, yet only have two victories in eleven away fixtures. Anyway, rant over - and so to the game. Tooting should at least have known what to expect after losing in the FA Vase here two weeks prior, yet fell behind just over a minute in. Some hesitant defending left Darnell Jon-Peter (the scorer of the only goal in the previous fixture) unmarked in front of goal, and Toby McKimm had little chance of repelling his strike. But the visitors gradually gained a foothold in the game, dominating much of the rest of the half possession-wise, and going in at the break on terms thanks to Max Oldham - who once plied his trade in this arena. Max displayed clever feet on the bobbly surface to control a Shawn Lyle knock-down, and kept a cool head to calmly shoot under the body of the advancing City keeper, Jacob Terry. The Terrors really should have been ahead by the time the whistle went, creating numerous chances. Hussein Siklawi twice shot over when in decent positions, and Darrall Wopara controlled a long-pass from Gideon Acheampong well, before Terry came out to block with his body. The rebound fell to Darral again, but Terry had got up quickly and diverted the second shot with his legs. Hussein had another chance, after Shawn had held the ball up well, and then released his strike-partner. Hoss cut inside his marker, got good power on his shot, but Terry was equal to it again, and saved well down low.
The second-half commenced in much the same way the first had finished; the Terrors enjoying the bulk of the possession, and Guildford content to almost play like an away side - sitting back, and looking to hit on the break. Despite the pattern of play, Tooting were finding it difficult to create anything tangible against such a deep-lying defence. Some neat passing did create a half-chance for Darral, but his strike from the edge of the box cleared the bar without troubling Terry too much. With just over twenty minutes left, Guildford did begin to come out of their shell a little, but they were still looking pretty toothless in attack. That all changed when the referee pointed to the spot following an innocuous-looking coming together in the area - there were few or no appeals for a spot-kick from the home crowd or their players. Nevertheless, with Toby gazing into the sun - and doing his best to shield his eyes while Reece Robins prepared for his run-up - it always looked likely he’d have little chance if the shot was on target, and that proved the case as Robins calmly stroked the ball home. Despite some late pressure, Shawn Lyle’s header which went wide was as close as we came to salvaging a point in the time that remained, as Guildford leapfrogged us in the table. Thankfully, we’ll not have to return there this season.
Tooting 1-3 Farnham Town
It was all about Shay Brennan, as Tooting departed the Surrey Senior Cup for another season. The former Terrors hitman, top-scorer in the whole of the CCL Premier Division (south) last season, was made captain for the night as he returned to his former stamping ground. He had a hand in the first, scored the second - and it looked for a time as if Farnham, currently on an unbeaten league run of fifty-six matches, might run up the sort of scoreline they’d managed here back in April, on the final day of the 2023/24 campaign. Yet Tooting managed to dig in, pull a goal back, and have their (currently) more illustrious opponents rattled on several occasions before they put things to bed with a late third. When you’re up against higher-level opposition, the one thing you want is to keep things tight early on, not give anything silly away, and play your way into things. So, of course, we were behind before three minutes had elapsed! A long-ball forward found Shay - in a borderline offside position - who outpaced Antonio Simeone down the right flank, and put in an inviting cross for his fellow striker, Owen Dean. Unmarked Dean would probably have applied the finishing touch, had Habeeb Adepoju not got there before him; Habeeb attempted to trap the ball with his left foot, before the momentum of his right carried through to slice the ball into the net. Farnham showed how seriously they were taking the game, with almost their full first choice eleven playing, and almost went further in front shortly after, when Sam de St. Croix curled an effort just wide from the edge of the box. Tooting were struggling to make any headway at this stage, with Farnham defending well and looking dangerous every time they attacked. The right side was proving particularly fruitful for them, and another move down this side ended with Shay Brennan’s shot being cleared off the line by skipper Simmo. But it was two at the break; Dean seized upon a loose pass and crossed from near the right corner flag, Shay Brennan took the ball down with one foot and flicked it past Toby McKimm with the other. It was a typical poacher’s goal, of which we saw plenty last season.
It looked grim, at this stage, for the hosts. But Jamie Byatt made a change at the break, with young Alex Cruickshank suffering from a touch of ‘flu; and his replacement, Taz Mahmoud, proved to be just the inspiration the Terrors were looking for. Four minutes into the second period, Conor Melody intercepted a loose pass in the centre circle, drove forward past two Farnham midfielders to buy himself some space, and played an inch-perfect pass to Taz who was advancing towards the edge of the box. He struck a fine effort wide of debut-making goalkeeper Charlie Burns, into the far corner. Suddenly it was a different Terrors side entirely, as they poured forward with confidence and had the Isthmian Leaguers rattled. Farnham were content to sit on their advantage and not take any undue riskes, and for the first time it looked as if we might be able to take the tie to penalties. It was not to be, however; Farnham were still dangerous on the break - as they proved when Toby had to save well from Owen Dean’s effort from the edge of the box. But the visitor’s top-scorer was not to be denied and finally killed any hopes of a Tooting recovery when he poked home a third with the outside of his foot as full-time loomed.
